Recently students have been learning about one point perspective drawings. I am incredibly pleased with how well students have been doing with this difficult concept. This week we began with our names, but, once we return from Spring Break we will begin to create cityscapes and interior rooms using one point perspective!
Students did a fabulous job drawing sneakers in their sketchbooks! Each student selected a video tutorial to follow along with then they were encouraged to add color!
Artwork by Artist Romero Britto Romero Britto is a current Brazilian Artist who has a BIG heart and has many things in common with the Keith Haring. Like Haring, Britto is an activist. When hurricane Katrina devastated many he made art work with a message of hope and happiness through his bright bold colored shapes and images Britto has helped many communities by making generous donations from his sold artworks.

The artist who inspired our work, pictured above, was Keith Haring. Haring was an activist and an artist who had a tremendous impact and legacy. His art was inspired by graffiti, pop art, and hip-hop. He loved the breakdancing scene in New York, during the 80's; thus came his famous 'Action Figure' drawings! Here are works of art from fourth and fifth grade, remote learners. As well as, artworks from Mrs. Snyder's fourth grade class. Do you love Haring's work of art? Do want to create more work inspired by Haring: Try these activities! Lesson Resources: www.deepspacesparkle.com/?s=keith+haring https://www.tate.org.uk/kids/explore/who-is/who-keith-haring Pictured above are artworks by artists in Mrs. Snyder's, fourth grade class. When we have art at home we create in our own space. For this assignment students were asked what items they wear, to stay warm and dry, when they play in the snow. After they created a list they then were ask to draw a "Winter Self Portrait". This project was inspired by an art teacher, whom I like to follow for her diverse lessons, ART WITH MRS. BROWN!
THIS SCHOOL YEAR HAS BEEN MET WITH MANY CHALLENGES FOR MYSELF, OUR STUDENTS, AND OUR FAMILIES. BUT, AS I REFLECT ON THIS COLLABORATION STUDENTS HELPED CREATE, I AM REMINDED AT HOW INCREDIBLY RESILIENT OUR CHILDREN REALLY OUR. JACK JOHNSON SANG "IT'S ALWAYS BETTER TOGETHER" AND I AGREE. EVEN IF MANY OF MY STUDENTS ARE LEARNING REMOTELY OR IN THEIR CLASS ROOMS, LEARNING TOGETHER AND SUPPORTING EACH OTHER THROUGH THIS YEAR THROUGH CREATION HAS BEEN MY "LIGHT". THANK YOU TO ALL THE STUDENTS WHO TOOK THE TIME TO SHARE TEIR TALENTS WHEN COLORING AND DESIGNING THEIR FEATHERS!
Last week, we learned about important parts of the landscape.
I hope our families and students enjoyed looking throughout their homes for items to create these awesome color wheels. I am very proud of ALL my Curtin art students who uploaded submissions to our class. Here are a few photos that are just popping with color! #CurtinArtEd

THIS IS MY SECOND YEAR AT CURTIN'S ART TEACHER AND I AM SO HAPPY THAT I AM NOW PART OF THIS ANNUAL CELEBRATION BECAUSE IT IS TRULY A FANTASTIC EVENT WHERE NOT ONLY DO WE MEET, GREET, AND LISTEN TO MUSIC BUT THERE ARE A TON OF INTERACTIVE ART MAKING EXPERIENCES FOR ALL AGES TO ENJOY! TO LOOK AT ALL OF THE AWESOME PHOTOS THAT ALBRIGHT STUDIO TOOK THROUGHOUT THE EVENING PLEASE CLICK HERE (MUST HAVE A FACEBOOK ACCOUNT). Earlier this year I promised to share our photorealism collaborations once they were put together and here they are! I may be biased, but, they look awesome! I love teaching students in Sixth grade about modern art. We moved from Photorealism to Optical Illusions. Here students have looked at many different types of visual illusionists like Bridget Riley and M.C. Escher. To learn more about these artists with your students check out these resources! Students are now working very hard at finishing their own Op Art. To see a video guide of this lesson click here.
Bridget Riley M.C. Escher More on Escher For the remainder of the school year, our fifth graders will be taking a trip through time and learning about art work through the ages. Our first stop is Cave Art or Prehistoric Art! Check out this short clip to see what we learned this week! We began our own cave art inspired paintings/drawings and what a great start they re off to! Curtin family and friends, this project is looking awesome! This week in fourth grade we learned about some serious drawing tools in order to begin these 2D drawings! Some vocabulary words to ask your students about are: (thank you google definition for providing these terms and meanings!)
I am loving the addition of sketchbooks in our art room. Every day we begin our class with a drawing prompt. Students then have 10 minutes to draw and color before we begin the day's lesson.
Recently, sixth grade learned a little bit about artist, Chuck Close. We looked at his photorealistic art work and found inspiration from his life story. Chuck Close has faced many obstacles within his lifetime and he always found a way to rise above! At Curtin, we all have had different experiences throughout our lives but if we all look at our challenges like Close, I know that each and everyone of us can achieve great things!
Students pictured below are painting their own grid, each grid is part of a larger photographed image. When completed we will add all the pieces together to reveal portraits of Nelson Mandala, Dorthy (from the Wizard of OZ), Frankenstein, and Harry Potter. You can veiw the lesson resources here.
Fifth grade is where "IT" is at this week! We are getting down and dirty with clay pumpkins after learning about modern Japanese artist, Yayoi Kusama. She is known as the "Princess of Dots" and create installations known as her infinity rooms. What is an installation you ask? It is an entire space that is engulfed with an art experience that spectators can become a part of when they walk into the room. Pretty cool huh?! YES! But, you do not have to take my word for it, check out her artwork for yourself by following the link posted above!

At Andrew G. Curtin, we are off to a fantastic start. Last week, students created their portfolios, where they will keep their collection of artworks that are completed throughout the year. They did so well during the first week of classes that I couldn't resist to get out the paint! Art teacher and blogger, Cassie Stephens' sketchbook lesson was my inspiration for this project, in which students are turning recycled manilla folders into sketchbooks! Finished works of arts are to follow! Resources: https://www.bloglovin.com/blogs/cassie-stephens-3450122/in-art-room-sketchbooks-for-kids-4523305734 |
Meet Mrs. Smith
Hi, I am so happy you are here! My name is Jillette Smith and my journey as an art educator has taken me on an incredible ride. I began teaching in a rural school district located in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. I taught in this district nearly 8 years. Recently, I began teaching art at a larger district near central PA; Williamsport Area School District, home of the Millionaires! I am very proud to be a Millionaire but miss my Bloomsburg Panthers dearly! I teach grades four, five, and six while serving roughly 500 students. Aside, from teaching; I am very passionate about professional development and sharing/collaborating with other art educators. I spend lots of time as a volunteer on the board of PA's chapter of NAEA (National Art Education Association). As the Regional Representative for PAEA, I help support art teachers in our local school districts by providing them with Act 48 accredited opportunities that pertain to them as artists and art educators, advocate for arts education in PA schools. I love serving on this board because of their strong contribution and dedication for art advocacy and quality arts education in schools for every student. The network of peers is invaluable to me and has shaped who I am as an art educator! To learn more about PAEA you can check out the website here! Archives
